As the result of my enquiries I have received a letter from Professor Brock, the Dean of the University of British Columbia, of which I send you a copy.
In my opinion the proposed arrangement would be excellent and I have no hesitation in recommending it. The Colony would have the advantage of some of the highest scientific experts and all the resources of the University would be employed to make the work a success. The expert would be paid at the rate of £800 per annum while absent from British Columbia, and travelling expenses. As the voyage from Vancouver to British Columbia is comparatively short, the payment for salary en route would be much less than in the case of a voyage from the United Kingdom even if half pay only were given in the latter case.
I am,
sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Under Secretary of State,
